There are many things that can go wrong in our lives and make us feel bad and unhappy. It could be anything, like a random social media post or a banner showing the “perfect” body. It could be something you heard on the news or a recollection from your past that came back to you. Any of these and a lot of other things can make you feel terrible and tarnish what would otherwise be a good or even enjoyable day. However, there are things you can do to get over your sadness and feel better, and you can do them today.
It’s important to remember that we’re not talking about depression, though. Depression is a whole different thing that needs to be talked about with a doctor. However, if you don’t have depression but are just feeling somewhat down, here are some things you can do today to feel happier.
Get Outside More
Natural sunlight is a great mood booster, and the more we can go outside and appreciate it, the better we will feel. When we have more natural light, it will help to keep our body’s internal clock in sync. This will help us sleep better and feel more rested when we wake up. Plus, our hormones will work better, which will make our moods (and mood swings) better.
When we are outside, we are also less likely to be subjected to blue light from screens like those on a phone or laptop because we won’t have as much access to them or want to use them because the beauty of the outside world is quite enough.
Eat The Right Foods
When you’re not feeling well, you might naturally reach for comfort foods to try to feel better. When we eat foods like macaroni and cheese, cheesecake, and chocolate that are rich, creamy, full of starches, and heavy, our serotonin levels will definitely go up.
Unfortunately, this feeling will only last for a short time, and by then, your body will have managed to miss out on a lot of the nutrients it requires to remain healthy and protect itself. This means that once the good feelings are gone, you will feel significantly worse than you did before. It is much more beneficial to consume foods that have all the vitamins and minerals you need. You might not think so, but these will also make you feel better, and when the chemicals wear off, you won’t feel bad.
Buy Something That Counts
When they’re having a bad day, a lot of people find that a little “retail therapy” helps make them feel a lot better. Again, this is a technique that will work for a short time, boosting our serotonin and making us feel less sad. It’s not a good idea overall, however, because it won’t solve the problem completely.
Unless you buy something important, that is. This means that you buy an item that changes things and really means something, either to you, or someone else. Or both. You might pay more at a coffee shop so that a homeless person can get a free drink or snack. Maybe you’ll give money to a good cause, like donating to veterans. Perhaps you’ll buy a gift for a loved one just because you know it will make them smile.
Spending your money on something that will make a difference now and in the future and that might even help someone else will make you feel better. Just don’t spend too much and be careful with credit cards because getting into debt will make you feel bad.
